A garden in memory of Lord Merylyn-Ree, a Labour MP for South Leeds from 1963 to 1992, has been built in Leeds. The Lord Merlyn-Rees Riverside Garden has been built beside the Aire and Calder Navigation at Knostrop Cut, Hunslet, and was opened on Friday by city officials. It forms part of a wide regeneration project area running through the Aire valley.
Lord Meryln-Rees died aged 85 in 2006 and was one of the city’s most recognised figures. He served under both James Callaghan and Harold Wilson. Lord Meryln-Rees was a former Labour Home and Northern Ireland Home Secretary.
Of Lord Rees, councillor Ann Castle said:
“I had a lot of respect for Lord Rees and remember the impact he had on Leeds.”
